Intrinsic Ocean–Atmosphere Variability of the Tropical Atlantic Ocean

چکیده
The tropical Atlantic variability is composed of three major patterns of significant importance for variability and predictability of climate in the Atlantic sector. They are the southern tropical Atlantic (STA) pattern with anomalous sea surface temperature (SST) fluctuations expanding from the Angolan coast to the central equatorial ocean, the northern tropical Atlantic (NTA) pattern centered near the northern African coast, and the southern subtropical Atlantic (SSA) pattern in the open subtropical ocean. Previous studies have suggested that both the regional air–sea coupling and remote forcing from outside the basin may affect the formation of these patterns and their variability. A specially designed global coupled ocean– atmosphere general circulation model, which eliminates air–sea feedback outside the Atlantic, reproduces the major features of these observed patterns realistically. This suggests that these patterns originate from air–sea coupling within the Atlantic Ocean or by the oceanic responses to atmospheric internal forcing, in which there is no anomalous forcing external to the Atlantic Ocean. The effect of the Pacific El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) seems to modulate their temporal evolution through influencing atmospheric planetary waves propagating

Atlantic Climate Variability Experiment Prospectus
Energetic, large-scale variability is observed in the atmosphere and ocean of the Atlantic Sector on interannual and decadal time scales. It is manifested as coherent fluctuations in temperature , rainfall, surface pressure and temperature reaching eastward to central Europe and northern Asia, southward to subtropical West Africa and westward to North and South America with a myriad of well doc...

This study investigates the contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August rainfall over Uganda and western Kenya (KU). The study has utilized the datasets including precipitation from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre, North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), South Atlantic Ocean Dipole Index (SAODI), ERA-interim reanalysis, and the Atlantic Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Singu...
متن کاملEight centuries of north atlantic ocean atmosphere variability
Climate in the tropical North Atlantic is controlled largely by variations in the strength of the trade winds, the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, and sea surface temperatures. A high-resolution study of Caribbean sediments provides a subdecadally resolved record of tropical upwelling and trade wind variability spanning the past 825 years. These results confirm the importance of...
متن کاملA Simple Model for the Pacific Cold Tongue and ENSO*
A conceptual model is constructed based upon the Bjerknes hypothesis of tropical atmosphere–ocean interaction. It is shown that strong feedbacks among the trade winds, equatorial zonal sea surface temperature contrast, and upper-ocean heat content occur in the tropical Pacific basin. Coupled atmosphere–ocean dynamics produce both the strong Pacific cold-tongue climate state and the El Niño–Sout...
متن کاملSea surface temperature variability: patterns and mechanisms.
Patterns of sea surface temperature (SST) variability on interannual and longer timescales result from a combination of atmospheric and oceanic processes. These SST anomaly patterns may be due to intrinsic modes of atmospheric circulation variability that imprint themselves upon the SST field mainly via surface energy fluxes. Examples include SST fluctuations in the Southern Ocean associated wi...
